Somewhere back in the mists of time, an astrophotographer (E.S. King - 1912, Hoag - 1960) noticed that certain types of film seemed to perform better during winter months than they did during the summer months. In simple terms, it took longer to expose to a set density level when the ambient temperature was warm than when it was cold. Not only did cold film hold it’s speed better, the colours were more accurate. This simple observation spawned a new tool for astrophotgraphy - the cold camera.

Sinisa Kukic is a cinematographer, car enthusiast, and craftsman. His photographic work is defined by the landscape of his childhood home, the former Yugoslavia, and later the urban landscape of Chicago. As an experimental filmmaker he created Pump, which has screen on KQED's Truly CA series and is rated the sixth greatest super 8 film of all time by Super8.org. Most recently his cinematography aired on BET's Lens on Talent (Palm Trees Down 3rd. St.) and also won best short documentary at SXSW (Mothersbane). You can find him in Los Angeles under the hood of a 1979 BMW 5 Series.

How much our world of moving-image entertainment has changed in the past decade! We now live in a world of the 24-Hour Movie, one that plays anytime and anywhere you want (and sometimes whether you want it to or not). It’s a movie we can access at home by pressing a few buttons on the remote (and agreeing to pay more for it than you might at the local video store) or with a few clicks of the mouse. The 24-Hour Movie now streams instead of unspools, filling our screens with images that, more and more, have been created algorithmically rather than photographically.
Construction is underway to convert a 330,000-sq. ft warehouse into the first of what could be seven to soundstages for Chicago Film Studios, on the 50 acre Ryerson Steel campus on the Southwest Side.
